Introduction Jesus Christ, soter, Greek for Savior, Deliverer, and Preserver.
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Welcome to God’s marvelous redemptive plan for salvation! The door into the kingdom of God is open through the life and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Once a person confesses his or her sin and receives Jesus Christ as Savior, the blood Christ shed at Calvary washes away all sin. The person’s sinful past is completely forgotten in the eyes of God. The greatest news today is that no one has to die and go to hell! Any man or woman can have abundant life upon this Earth and eternal life with the Creator of this universe for all eternity (John 3:15-21). Are you interested in knowing more about the doctrine of salvation according to the written Word of God, the Holy Bible? Are you wanting to know if you are really saved? Would you like to have a Biblical guideline for leading others to Jesus? These questions can be answered simply if you know how and where to look. They can be found by reading God’s Word, the Bible. Many people ask intellectual questions concerning the Bible and salvation. However, when one seeks God through spiritual, understanding, there is a wealth of unlimited resources to draw upon throughout life. Receiving God’s redemptive plan is a spiritual experience in Jesus Christ. It is supported by scriptures found throughout the Bible, from the first book, Genesis, to the last book, Revelation. Redemption is similar to driving a new automobile with many added features. If this “loaded” car has computerized air conditioning, a sun roof, automatic door locks, and an alarm system, the owner must learn how to use these features and become comfortable driving his new car without wrecking it. Before purchasing a new car, most customers have numerous questions they want answered before they will agree to buy the vehicle. Similarly, while you explore Bible teachings in the pages of this booklet, you can be assured that the Holy Spirit will lead you into the clear spiritual understanding and application of salvation God intended. Guide To Salvation is designed for those who are seeking sound biblical facts concerning the doctrine of salvation. The material in this booklet offers a simple overview from the fall of mankind through salvation in Jesus Christ. The study method used in this booklet is designed to answer basic questions for all who are interested in God’s redemptive plan and how to lead others to Christ. I pray this material will encourage your faith. God’s mercy continues to reach out and save the souls of mankind throughout the world. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8, 9
As Philippians 2:10-12 says: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
CHAPTER 1 Understanding The Fall of Man
1. What is “the fall of man?” After Adam and Eve accepted Satan’s lie and rebelled against God’s command through disobedience, mankind then took on Satan’s nature and was placed under his dominion. This was the fall of man.
This is the original command God gave Adam and Eve: And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die. Genesis 2:15
God commanded that man could freely eat of any tree within the Garden of Eden except of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God proclaimed that if he disobeyed, man would surely die. Man’s disobedience created an opportunity for Satan, in the form of the serpent, to bring death to God’s eternal human creation. Satan realized that he could dismantle communication between God and His children through this strategy. The serpent lied and deceived Eve into eating the forbidden fruit. Eve then gave it to her husband to eat. They both disobeyed God’s command by eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. When they did this, they exchanged life for death! They sold the life given to them by God for the nature of the devil. The fall of man was complete. Man was cut off from God’s fellowship. He was placed under the devil’s dominion, and his nature was transformed. Through Adam and Eve’s disobedience of God’s original command mankind became the devil’s children! (See Genesis 3) 2. Why did Adam and Eve sin? Adam and Eve fell into sin because they accepted the devil’s lie. God is a just God, and His Word is true. Adam and Eve chose the serpent’s word over God’s Word. The result of their sin was spiritual death. Spiritual death was immediately activated, and eventually it brought natural death as well. God specifically said in Genesis 2:17, “You shall surely die.” The devil opposed God’s truth in Genesis 3:4, “And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die.”
3. What did Adam and Eve do after they sinned? Adam and Eve tried to cover their sin of disobedience and spiritual guilt by hiding themselves from God. Their eyes were opened to the sin they had committed, yet God in His great wisdom made provision for them despite their disobedience. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. Genesis 3:7 In the third chapter of Genesis, we read that after Adam and Eve’s eyes were opened, the reality of sin was revealed to them. They covered themselves with fig leaves, hoping to hide from the voice of God. The Bible tells us that Adam was afraid. As a result of sin, his peace was replaced by fear. Adam had become accustomed to walking and talking with God in the cool of the day. Before he sinned, he’d had no shame facing the Creator; they had shared perfect fellowship. But now the Father could no longer freely communicate with His creation. God cursed the serpent and commanded it to be a crawler and eater of the dust (Genesis 3:14). Then God made a promise in Genesis 3:15 to redeem man from the serpent’s captivity: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
This is considered to be the first prophecy concerning the promised coming of Jesus Christ, the Savior of mankind. Thus, the thread of Redemption started with a merciful God declaring that One would come who would pay the price for sin. That One was His Son, Jesus. God’s mercy endured regardless of the devil’s deception and man’s disobedience. God made coats of skin—the first covering for sin—clothed Adam and Eve with them, and then drove them out of the Garden of Eden. He placed angels and a flaming sword at the edge of the garden to guard the way to the tree of life. (See Genesis 3:21-24.) 4. Why were the Law and the blood sacrifice necessary? The Law of Moses was a set of rules given by God, Man needed to abide by these rules to receive a covering for sin. These rules were to be obeyed for continual forgiveness and blessing. But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I commanded thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee. Deuteronomy 28:15 Thus, man was given the choice to receive blessings or cursings, depending of how he observed God’s commandments. The Law was totally focused upon outward signs. Those who served God were required to obey certain rules. The shedding of animal blood in regular sacrifices was a type of temporary covering (or atonement) over the people for their sins against God. Atonement for the entire nation was granted by God once a year when the High Priest presented offerings in the Holy of Holies. Leviticus 17:11 says: For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. The Promised Lamb of God Finally, there was also a cry from the Old Testament prophets about a Savior who would come into the world and become “the Lamb of God,” the perfect, sinless sacrifice. Their prophecies foretold that He would die for the sins of the world and would arise from the dead. Isaiah 53:4, 5 speaks of Him: Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
This shedding of the Messiah’s blood also signified an inward work of forgiveness. From that time on, every man, woman, and child who would confess and believe in their hearts that Jesus Christ was the Savior of the world could be saved. Free From Condemnation Those who accept Jesus into their hearts and lives no longer suffer from the condemnation of sin, as we see in Romans 8:1, 2: There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. The Spirit of life in Christ Jesus rules over the law of death and gives us freedom from the law of death.
Jesus’ blood sets us free from “the law of sin and death,” which means we are totally free from legalism, totally free from sickness and disease, and totally free from poverty! Questions on Chapter 1 1. What is “the fall of man”? 2. Why did Adam and Eve sin? 3. What did Adam and Eve do after they sinned? 4. Why was the Law established? Why was a blood sacrifice necessary?
CHAPTER 2
The Gospel Message
1. What is the Gospel message?
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and death. Revelation 1:18
The Gospel message is “good news” that reveals Jesus Christ as the Son of God who came and walked upon the Earth. Jesus was God in the flesh. He was crucified on the cross on Mount Calvary for the sins and sicknesses of the world for every person who was ever born or who will ever be born. After His death, He descended into the lower part of the Earth, taking away the keys of death and hell from the devil (Revelation 1:18). He arose the third day to resurrection life. Now He offers abundant life in this world and eternal life in heaven to all who will believe in Him. The Gospel message is good news! 2. What is a Christian? A Christian is someone who has received Jesus Christ as his or her Savior. A Christian is someone who has repented of his sins and is attempting to pattern his lifestyle after Jesus Christ, based on God’s Word. 3. What does the term “born again” mean? Even as the flesh or body of man goes through a natural birth, the spirit of man goes through a spiritual birth, Jesus taught in the third chapter of John’s Gospel. Jesus said in John 3:6, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” Therefore, the term “born again” means that Jesus Christ is now living inside a person, and his human spirit has been reborn. Gift from God For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23
In Vine’s Expository Dictionary, the Greek word for salvation, soteria, implies deliverance, preservation, and salvation. It refers to “the spiritual and eternal deliverance granted immediately by God to those who accept His conditions of repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus, in whom alone it is to be obtained, Acts 4:12, and upon confession of Him as Lord.” The Jesus Road There is only one way to heaven, and it is through Jesus Christ, the free gift of God. Salvation through Jesus is the deliverance that rescues those who are destined for hell because of their sins. According to John 14:6: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. J. B. Phillips translates this verse as, “I myself am the road....” The Jesus road is the only way to heaven! 5. What is repentance? “Repentance” is asking for forgiveness of your sins with the heart attitude of choosing to turn away from sin and live a new life for Jesus Christ. “Grace” is the unmerited favor of God, the pardon of sin. Grace is involved not only at the time an individual is born again or saved; grace is also available when a Christian stumbles. Grace is not a license to sin; it is a license for forgiveness. Here are a few scriptures that refer to repentance: In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Matthew 3:1,2 But every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Ephesians 4:7
Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance.
Matthew 3:8
In the margin of the Cambridge Bible, “meet” is defined as ‘‘suitable for repentance.’’ Evidence of Repentance When God has truly worked within the spirit of an individual who responds to the gift of salvation through confession and believing, that person’s life outwardly shows the inward change. In other words, there should be evidence of repentance in a person’s life. A genuine Christian does not want to do the things he once did. Although the devil may tempt him, the Greater One (the Holy Spirit) living within the believer is able to help him overcome all obstacles and temptations. Acts 19:18-20 is a perfect example of true repentance: And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed. There has been a misunderstanding in both secular and religious circles that doing good works is a sign of repentance and/or a way to earn your way to heaven. The only way to heaven is by receiving Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and repenting of your sins to God! The works we do must be based on real faith, which comes when Jesus is living and active inside us. Faith combined with works is the result of true salvation.
6. After I repent for the first time, do I have to keep repenting?
There is an initial repentance which occurs when a person acknowledges his spiritual state and recognizes his need for a Savior. Everyone born into this world of sin is contaminated with Adam and Eve’s ‘‘original sin.’’ Romans 3:23 tells us: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. It is also true that walking the Christian path will call for other times of repentance, because believers are not perfect this side of heaven. As the apostle John tells us: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1: 9 7. Do I have to be baptized in water to be saved?
No! The Bible clearly states that the power of forgiveness comes to us through the blood of Jesus Christ. However, every believer should make an effort to be baptized in water. Water baptism is a symbol of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. ‘‘The waters of baptism’’ provides an opportunity for the believer to give a public witness to their faith in Jesus Christ. They also experience a further work of sanctification by an inward cleansing and knowing of a true salvation in Jesus Christ. Jesus told His disciples: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Matthew 28:19 Forgiveness of Sins by the Blood The thief who was crucified beside Jesus had no opportunity to be water baptized. Breathing his last words, he asked Jesus for forgiveness. Did Jesus reply, “Because you did not experience water baptism, you are damned to torment”? No! It was by the shed blood of Jesus Christ that the thief received the forgiveness of sins, not by water. This is his story, according to Luke 23:42-43
And he [the thief] said unto Jesus, Lord; remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise. The Importance of the Blood and the Water In summary, a believer who is serving the Lord should first understand the importance of the blood of Jesus Christ. Second, he or she should be baptized in water as a further work of sanctification, identification, and public witness. (See Matthew 3 and 4.) John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness, prepared the way for Jesus, proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand!” and baptizing converts in the Jordan River. Jesus identified Himself there and publicly displayed the importance of water baptism by having John baptize Him. From this we can see the importance Jesus placed on water baptism as a continuing work of sanctification, This was also a sign to all that Jesus was the Son of God. This experience marked the beginning of Jesus’ earthly ministry. Through it, He was empowered with the Holy Spirit for service in ministry, as we see in the following account: And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Matthew 3:16, 17 The New Testament Pattern The New Testament pattern of immersion follows the example Jesus Christ gave the Church. That’s why all Christians should make an effort to be water baptized. However, if a believer dies before he or she has an opportunity to be water baptized, the blood of Jesus Christ is still the only cleansing power, as we saw from the story of the thief on the cross.
8. Heaven and hell defined. Heaven is a place beyond the natural realm where God and all His angels dwell. They war on our behalf against the forces of evil and darkness. As Jesus told the thief on the cross, “Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.” Hell, known as Sheol-Hades, is a place where the unrighteous those who have rejected the salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ are with Satan and the fallen angels. Demons operate out of Hades in the spiritual realm, causing havoc in the natural world. Already, many unredeemed souls are gnashing their teeth in absolute torment in hell. They are waiting for the final judgment, when all of them will be thrown into the lake of fire for eternity. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Revelation 21:8 9. Will all good People make it to heaven? No! Only those who have received Jesus Christ as their personal Savior are destined to enter heaven. Doing good works or giving money for charity neither buys nor guarantees entrance into heaven. And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. Romans 11:6
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8, 9
‘‘I Want To Be Saved’’ Every person who does not accept Jesus as his or her personal Savior will face hell and damnation for eternity. This word “saved” means to be free from living in hell. You may also have abundant life here on this Earth when you receive Jesus, the Savior of the world. Do not wait for the proper time to be saved. The Bible says that today is the day of salvation!
... behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:2 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved, Romans 10:9
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13 A Salvation Prayer When you are leading someone to Jesus, have that person pray out loud, and if you are coming to know Jesus as your personal Savior do the same now: ‘‘Dear Jesus, the Bible says that today is the day of salvation. I need You, Jesus, today. I recognize that I am a sinner and in need of a savior.’’ ‘‘Jesus, I confess with my mouth and believe in my heart that you died on the cross for my sins and were raised from the dead. I plead the blood of Jesus Christ today over my spirit, soul, and body. I ask You, Jesus, to come into my heart.’’ ‘‘You promised me, dear Jesus, that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. I openly confess today that I am saved in Jesus’ name. Amen.’’ 10. What has happened to me? You have been born again! It is similar to the day you were born into this world as a baby. When you first came into the world, your surroundings were very different from when you were in the darkness of your mother’s womb. (Your body and soul were functioning even then.) Now another part of you has been born again—your human spirit, the spirit man on the inside of you. Before being ‘‘born again,’’ you were unable to effectively communicate with God because your spirit was dead to God. Now it is alive to God, and the same kind of sweet fellowship Adam once enjoyed with his heavenly Father has been restored to you! The prophecy we read in Genesis 3:15 has been fulfilled by Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross! Spirit, Soul, and Body And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirits and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
Many ministers and teachers have leaned toward teaching first about body, then soul, and, last, spirit. However, this puts more priority on the natural realm, encouraging that realm to rule. The following statement will help you begin to understand the importance of the spirit man being trained. Quote it daily to yourself: ‘‘I am a spirit I possess a soul, and I live in a body.’’ The day you were born again had nothing to do with your body, (If you had blue eyes yesterday, you still have blue eyes today.) It had to do with your spirit, the spirit man inside you has been made ‘‘a new creature,’’ according to the Bible: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Another translation reads, ‘‘...a new species of being that never existed before.’’ The New English Bible translates this 28 verse as, “When anyone is united to Christ, there is a new world; the old order has gone, and a new order has already begun.”
A New Order A new order was established within your spirit man when you were born again. You can sense new life bubbling up inside you, can’t you? Why is this happening? Because your old spirit man has been ‘‘born again.’’ Yes, your human spirit has always been inside you, but it was full of death, empty and dark - dead to God. Now your spirit man has been recreated. Old things passed away, and all things have become new. Fallen man has been raised from spiritual death! In essence, you have been born again, and a new order has begun in your life. Questions on Chapter 2 1. What is the Gospel message? 2. What is a Christian? 3. What does the term “born again” mean? 4. Define salvation. 5. What is repentance? 6. Once I have repented, do I have to keep repenting? 7. Do I have to be water baptized to be saved?
CHAPTER 3 WALKING IN FAITH
1. Is the Bible important ?
But he [Jesus] answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4 Jesus tells us that we cannot live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God. This means we must absorb the Bible into our spirits as our body takes in natural food. Christians must meditate on the written Word of God every day. It is helpful for the newly born again to start by reading the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. 2. Who wrote the Bible?
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. I Corinthians 2:14 The Bible was written by men of God who were ‘‘moved upon’’ (inspired) by the Holy Spirit. There are 39 books in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament, for a total of 66 books. When we study the history of the Bible, we find many Messianic prophecies that point to the coming of Jesus Christ. The reason it is important to read the Bible daily is because it is the voice of God speaking to believers. The Word of God was not written to unbelievers. 3. Is Prayer Important?
Yes! Jesus spent much of His time in prayer with His Father. Jesus sought direction from Him throughout His life. Christian believers will also enjoy spending time communicating with the Father. It is easy to pray. Just quiet your heart and listen. Ask God for the answers to the questions you have, and He will confirm them by the Holy Spirit and His written Word. And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. Luke 11: 1
4. Is church attendance and Christian fellowship necessary?
Yes! It is essential that all Christians find a local church they sense God has led them to attend. Members of the Body of Christ need one another. All Christians have a place within the body, not only to grow spiritually, but to encourage others to develop corporately and individually. Wouldn’t it be frustrating if your mind told your hand to do something—like pick up a piece of food and your hand did not respond? You might die of starvation! Members of the Body of Christ need to function together so God may accomplish His will here on Earth. Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church, and we are members of the Body of Christ. First Corinthians 12 clearly explains what part the Body of Christ plays in helping individual members function. ‘‘Church’’ can be defined as a gathering of Christians meeting together in a certain location to worship God together and learn from God’s Word. ‘‘Fellowship’’ can be defined as a gathering of Christians to have a time of communication. It includes meeting one another on a social level for encouragement and strength. New converts should have an opportunity to be part of a group that studies the Bible, prays for each other, and is willing to reach out to evangelize the lost. Freely Give God’s redemptive plan inspires believers to become His witnesses to all the world. In Acts 1:8 the Holy Spirit has empowered the believers to be witnesses. Jesus Christ gave a Mandate in Mark 16: commanding the believer to go and preach the Gospel to every creature. We have the message the world is waiting to hear, rather some receive and others do not. Salvation is a free gift to all the world. Ephesians 2:8 says, ‘‘For by grace are ye saved through faith . . .’’ Jesus Christ paid the price for your sin. As Matthew 10:8 says, ‘‘Freely you have received, freely give.’’ We are blessed to have received the free gift of salvation without being crucified physically like Jesus was on Calvary,Thank God we can share with others the good news freely! 5. Share Your testimony You may not be a preacher, but that does not exclude you from sharing the Gospel message. Believers have a mandate to share their testimony. It is simple: Tell the unsaved how you received Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, and ask them if they, too, would like to accept Him as the Savior of the world. If you do not know how to lead them in a sinner’s prayer, use the one in this book. Together we can see revival sweep the world in the wonderful name of Jesus! And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Mark 16:15
